Bernard Sylvester Lewis

Itis with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Bernard Sylvester Lewis on August 24, 2026, just two days shy of his 80th birthday.

Born in Washington, D.C., on August 26, 1946, to the late Howard and Agnes Lewis, Bernard’s life was defined by dedication, warmth, and a joy that left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Bernard proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1972 as an aircraft mechanic and crew chief on B52 aircraft. Following his honorable discharge, he began a beautiful new chapter, marrying the love of his life, Melanie Heather (Wilson) Lewis, on September 23, 1972. Together, they shared a wonderful partnership of nearly 54 years.

A hardworking and loyal man, Bernard spent 40 years as an Electrical Maintenance Technician at Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, retiring in May 2012. He fully embraced his life in Canada, proudly becoming a Canadian citizen in June 2006. Following his retirement, Bernard and Melanie relocated to Corunna, Ontario, to be closer to their beloved daughter and grandchildren. There, they became active members of the local Legion Chapter 447, where Bernard was honored to join as a veteran.

Bernard had a rich and vibrant life outside of work. In 1992, he took up Tai Chi, mastering it so quickly that within a year he was leading beginner classes two nights a week. Over the years, he also found great joy in bowling, attending game nights with family and friends.

Above all, Bernard will be remembered for his incredible gift of making everyone feel instantly welcome. He was the king of funny stories, and his big, contagious laugh could fill any room. Anyone lucky enough to cross his path will forever remember his wonderful sense of humor and his warm spirit.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter. Bernard is survived by his devoted wife, Melanie; his loving daughter, Vanessa Lewis-Leonard (Bennie); and his cherished grandchildren, Ally Ramakers (Jacob Harris) and Evan Ramakers. He will also be deeply missed by his siblings, Wilhelmina (late Ralph), Vanessa (Robert), and Theodore (Rachel). He is now reunited in peace with his parents, Howard and Agnes, and his siblings, the late Howard (Betsy) and the late Gwendolyn (late David).

Asper Bernard’s wishes there is no formal service. Cremation has been in trusted to Lakeview Cremation and Funeral Services in Sarnia.
