Kathy Rath

1948-2025

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Kathy Rath, in her 77th year, on June 13, 2025. She was the beloved wife of Dave, loving mother of Kevin (Jill) Rath and Becky (Ian) Shaw, and cherished grandmother to Alice and Mallory Rath and Owen Shaw. Kathy is survived by her siblings: Pat Kelley, Arn (Carmelle) Kelley, John (Shirley) Kelley, and Pam (Jim) Caley, as well as her brother-in-law, Gary (Koula) Rath. She was predeceased by her parents, Harold and Eileen Kelley.

A gifted artist, Kathy had a natural talent that she developed in her spare time. Active in the local art community, her work—especially her renowned Bluewater Bridge prints—can be found in homes across Sarnia and around the world. She generously shared her enthusiasm for painting through years of teaching, inspiring and encouraging students from all walks of life. In retirement, she continued teaching a close-knit group of women every Wednesday morning, a circle that became a source of deep friendship and mutual support.

Though art was a lifelong passion, Kathy’s greatest joy was her family, especially her role as “Nanny” to her grandchildren. She was the heart of her family—strong, kind, and endlessly loving. Kathy faced life’s challenges with grace and quiet courage, offering strength and comfort to all who knew her. Her warmth could brighten any room, and her absence will be deeply felt. The love she gave so freely lives on in all of us.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Kathy’s dear cousins, Alice Frew and Susan Miller, for their loving care and support during her time in palliative care, as well as to the many visitors whose presence she so appreciated. Special thanks also to Dr. Lily and the compassionate staff of the Bluewater Health Palliative Team for their exceptional care and kindness during her final weeks.

Cremation has taken place. A private family gathering will be held at a later date to honour Kathy’s life.
